McLean Real Estate
McLean is an unincorporated area in the eastern part of Fairfax County. McLean is bounded on the east by Arlington County, on the west by the communities of Great Falls and Vienna, on the south by Falls Church and on the north by the Potomac River. McLean is well known for its many upscale homes and its shopping centers, Tysons Corner Mall and Tysons Galleria. The Tysons Corner area is considered the job center of the County. Because of its prestige and proximity to Washington, D.C., McLean is home to many politicians, diplomats, affluent professionals and high ranking government employees. Washington, D.C. is easily accessible via the George Washington Parkway, Route 123, Chain Bridge, and Old Dominion Drive via Arlington. Other nearby suburbs are accessible via Route 123, Dulles Access Road and the Capital Beltway. The extension of the Metro from Falls Church through Tysons Corner to Dulles Airport promises to make the immediate area more of a pedestrian friendly community. Median household income was more than $156,000 according to 2005-2007 Census data.
McLean is home to many major corporations including Booz Allen Hamilton; Capital One; Cardinal Bank; Freddie Mac; Gannett; Hilton Hotels; Mars; MicroStrategy; Science Applications Corporation; Sunrise Senior Living and USA Today. McLean also is home to the CIA which is located in the Langley area of the community.
McLean received its name from John Roll McLean, one of the investors in the Washington and Old Dominion Railway which connected McLean to Washington, D.C. The community was founded in 2010 and, as of 2000, had a population of 38,929.
Housing in McLean is a mix of single family, townhouses and mid and high-rise apartments and condos. Virtually all of the townhouses, apartments and condos are located on or proximate to major arterials. These residences have a wide age range. Typically, the newer multi-family homes tend to be more expensive. There is a wide mix of single family homes clustered throughout the community. By and large, the eastern section of McLean contains older housing stock sited on smaller quarter-half acre lots. Many of these home, date to the 1940’s-1950 and are either ramblers, split foyers and split level in style, ranging from 2000-4000 square feet. Many newer and larger colonial and Craftsmen style homes have been built in the last 20 years on the remaining open land or on lots where older homes were removed. These homes generally are larger, ranging from 4000-6000 square feet or more. Well known neighborhoods in the eastern part of McLean include Franklin Park, Chesterbrook Woods, Salona Village, Evans Farm, Chain Bridge Forest, El Nido, Chesterbrook Gardens, McLean Manor, Ballantrae Farms and Southridge.
The single family homes located to the west of Route 123 tend to be newer and are located on larger lots, often at least a half acre. The homes tend also to be much larger in size with a range of 4000-15000 square feet. Among the well known communities in this part of McLean are The Reserve, Langley Forest, Langley Farms, Langley Ridge, Ingleside, Garfield Park and McLean Hamlet.
McLean also is noted for its schools. Both Langley and McLean High Schools are consistently ranked among the best schools in Fairfax County for academic performance. The community also is home to elite private schools such as the Potomac School and the Madeira School.
