Alexandria, Virginia is located on the west bank of the Potomac River just south of Washington, D.C. Incorporated in 1779, Alexandria became a major port of entry for foreign vessels and a major export center. The streets were lined with brick homes, some of which still stand today. Alexandria's political, social and commercial interests were of great importance to many local residents at the time of the American Revolution, including George Washington who lived just south at Mount Vernon. Alexandria is one of America's most historic communities. The charm of Old Town is well preserved and protected. The last 20 years have seen tremendous commercial developement. Today, the area is known for its museums, architecture, restaurants, shops and hotels, and is the home of many prominent regional, national and multi-national businesses. Alexandria is close to major commuting routes such as the George Washington Parkway, the Capital Beltway, I-95, Route 1 and Route 7. The Metrorail system runs through Alexandria and links it to the rest of the metropolitan area. Reagan International Airport is close by as well. Beyond the Old Town area which offers a wonderful collection of older homes, Alexandria also boasts many wonderful neighborhoods both in the City and the adjacent part of Alexandria which is located in Fairfax County. Such neighborhoods as Del Ray, Mount Vernon, Hollin Hills, Bellehaven and Quaker Hill offer a variety of home styles in quiet neighborhoods.
